Word Invasion

Type: Single Player
Content: Parts of Speech
Common Core Standard: L.2.1 Conventions: Word-type usage

Word Invasion provides practice in matching word types. Jellyfish with words in them drift toward the octopus at the bottom. Word types are placed in the octopus, and then the octopus is activated to fire beams that destroy the matching word. Your student reads the type and determines whether the word closest to the octopus matches the type. If the word and type match, your student can fire at the word and move to the next type.

  • Many of the students play video games all the time at home. This was a way to let them enjoy their playing time, but to practice a skill at the same time.
  • Aligning the joy of gaming with practicing math facts clearly helps transform the experience and invites students to learn in an environment they are not only comfortable with but would seek out given the choice.
  • The math activities on your site have improved the students performance grades in classroom timed tests and have boosted the students confidence in their math abilities.
